Higher Education -
The University of Tasmania's
oldest campus is in Hobart. It has approximately 6000 students (full
time equivalent).
Launceston's campus has been built up over the past three decades.
It is located in the northern suburbs, 10 minutes by bus or car from
the city centre. Alternatively, it can be reached by the bike/walking
tracks. The campus claims to be state-of-the-art in its layout and
facilities. About 4500 students study here.
Tasmania's teachers and nurses are educated at the aunceston campus.
As well, a wide range of professions such as architects, accountants,
agricultural scientists, medical technologists, computer specialists
and social workers, are trained here.
The University is determined to attract more mainland and overseas
students to study here. more than $1 million worth of scholarships
is available for the academic year 2003.

Located adjacent to the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania
is the Australian Maritime College.
It has an excellent reputation and attracts students both nationally
and internationally. It has a Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Environment
and a Faculty of Maritime Transport and Engineering. The College offers
courses in Maritime Operations, Marine Engineering, Fisheries and
Marine Environment, Maritime Business, Naval Architecture and Ocean
Engineering.

TAFE Tasmania provides
courses
providing practical training for a large variety of careers. Its courses
are developed in consultation with industry and are nationally recognised.
TAFE Tasmania has been recognised as Australia's best vocational training
provider.
