About Tasmania

Australia is a vast country covering 7, 682, 300km2. Its 7 states and territories vary greatly in terms of climate, geography and lifestyle. Tiny Tasmania, Australia's island state comprises only a fraction of Australia's total area, 67,800 km2 and yet it is unique in many ways.

While Tasmania has a rich Aboriginal History dating back many years, its European History is much shorter. Originally named Van Diemens Land by Abel Tasman in 1642, Tasmania became a dreaded penal colony. Today however, Tasmania's rugged West and South-West, spectacular central plateau, fertile North West and East Coast farmlands and splendid seacoast have earned it the name "Treasure Island". So what does Tasmania have to offer in terms of scenery, travel, everyday living , climate and politics?
